Elise launches Mountain Gorilla Tag for Virunga on World Wildlife Day

Elise Mertens partners with Beabond to launch a Mountain Gorilla Tag in support of Virunga National Park and their efforts around the critically endangered gorilla population. The world population of mountain gorillas is currently estimated to be around 1,000 individuals - Virunga is home to a third of those remaining. The tag is an exclusive necklace with a  design featuring the footprint of a gorilla and an ethically sourced Botswana diamond.

It’s a dream of mine to visit Africa - to visit Virunga Park, see the animals and meet the Rangers and team who work so hard every day. I’m honoured to wear an official Rangers badge on my tennis bag - it has inspired me to do more! This necklace and campaign is just a small way to show support and bring attention to the important work they do.

About Virunga National Park

National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is Africa’s most bio diverse protected area that exists to protect over one thousand species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, including the last of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas. The world population of mountain gorillas is currently estimated to be around 1,000 individuals - VIrunga is home to a third of those remaining.

Situated in a region which has been deeply impacted by the effects of war and armed conflict for over 20 years, Virunga is currently protected by a dedicated team of 689 Rangers. The local men and women go through intensive training, risking their lives on a daily basis to safeguard the Park’s exceptional wildlife.

Alongside this essential conservation work, the Park is committed to supporting local communities. Virunga has a vision for responsibly harnessing the Park’s natural resources to create new opportunities for the four million people that live within a day’s walk of its borders.
